UNV invites you to join its Volunteering Matters campaign

In this very special year, join UNV and internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Angélique Kidjo in a campaign to show the world why volunteering matters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjPEfhu3kvs .

This year International Volunteer Day – 5 December – will be a critical moment not only for the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme but also for volunteering worldwide. The tenth Anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers (IYV+10) will culminate with the UN General Assembly discussing volunteerism. And, UNV will launch the first-ever State of the World’s Volunteerism Report (SWVR).

To mark International Volunteer Day this year, we chose the theme Volunteering Matters because volunteers have the power to change lives. For the full potential of volunteerism to be realized, though, more conducive policies are needed, and organizations need to advocate for the key role volunteer action has in attaining sustainable development. These are some of the key issues that have emerged through IYV+10 and SWVR and we want to shine a spotlight on these in the lead-up to and on International Volunteer Day 2011.

We want to showcase examples of volunteer action in relation to these key issues from every country in the world. Join us from 30 October to 6 December by submitting a photo in response to weekly questions posted on our campaign webpage: http://volunteeringmatters.unv.org. We encourage you to participate by sharing photos and your views about how you experience the power of volunteer action in your community and country. After six weeks, the photo voted the most compelling by our Facebook fans will become the UNV Facebook profile picture for 2012. Every photo submitted will help light-up our world. On 7 December UNV will reveal a mosaic of your photos, which will be a snapshot of our volunteering world.

Already many of you are gearing up to mark International Volunteer Day. We encourage you to amplify our message by adopting the theme: Volunteering Matters. To assist you in making these events as successful and colourful as possible, we have made available IYV+10 and Volunteering Matters promotional materials, which you can download here: http://www.unv.org/volunteeringmatters/downloads. Here you will also find a Public Service Announcement featuring Angélique Kidjo, and in the coming weeks other videos and resources will appear for use as part of your events.

On 5 December visit the Volunteering Matters campaign page to share your photos, plus see and chat about what others around the world are doing to mark International Volunteer Day. In the meantime, if you have further queries, please contact info@onlinevolunteering.org .

In this very special year, let’s show the world why volunteering matters!
