Intervention made at the Beijing+25 Sub-Regional Consultation with youth in Chişinău

On 5th of September 2019, at the UN Women office in Chisinau were organized discussions with Alia El-Yassir, UN Women Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia regarding the Beijing+25.

Andrei Gaiu, Executive Director, Association ”Youth for the right to live” (TDV) / Board Member, National Youth Council from Moldova (CNTM) had the following intervention:

First of all, I want to say that we appreciate your intention to organize this regional consultation and for us it’s really important that you want to hear and listen our opinion on how the implementation of the Beijing Declaration is going on and which are the things that could be improved.

In the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, Chapter 4, Strategic Objectives and Actions, point K ”Women and environment” is mention several times the idea that Women have often played leadership roles In promoting an environmental ethic, reducing use of resources, reusing and recycling resources to minimize waste and excessive consumption. Taking into account that in the document are written recommendations, not only for Governments, but also for international organizations, civil society organizations and private sector, the fact that UN agencies, including Women in Moldova and many of it’s partners are using in huge amounts the single use plastic, especially small plastic bottles, which mostly cannot be recycled in our country, are using balloons at theirs events, and very often are printing materials which can easily be shared online is not sustainable.

These are the things that are promoted on the official pages of some of the UN Agencies. As we understand and believe, these international institutions should promote good behavioral models to the women which are affected by the poverty and environment pollution. The current pattern of resources usage is not sustainable and it should change it to a more sustainable one.

How UN Women will solve this problem?, how it will promote a more sustainable pattern of resources use among its partners? and in general how it can help other UN agencies, at least in Moldova, to have a more sustainable approach in their activities?

As a response, Ms. Alia El-Yassir said that this ethical-ecological problem is taken into account and they will try to make actions in order to be more eco-responsible, both at the UN Women office in Moldova and at the regional level.
